Description

Behesht-e Zahra, located in the south of Tehran, is considered one of the most famous and largest cemeteries in the capital. This cemetery is the resting place of many unknown soldiers and fighters of the Iran-Iraq war who defended their homeland to the last breath.

The area of this cemetery was initially about 314 hectares, which later in 1997 increased by about 110 hectares and in 2008 by about 160 hectares more. To date, more than 2 million people have been buried in this cemetery. This vast cemetery can well demonstrate the mourning and burial customs of Shia Muslims, which include washing the deceased with rosewater, reciting the Quran and prayers, and placing flowers on their graves.
