Description

If you have ever thought that the Caspian Sea has no islands, I must surprise you. This northern lake has a beautiful and small island. Ashuradeh is the only island of the Caspian Sea located near Bandar Torkaman. Until a few decades ago, Ashuradeh Island was like a small town, full of inhabitants, but with the rising water level of the Caspian, all residents left this island and now few people think about living on this island.

The most important reason for Ashuradeh's significance is caviar farming. About 40 percent of Caspian caviar is obtained in Ashuradeh. On the other hand, Ashuradeh is one of the most important wildlife habitats in the world. This small Caspian island annually hosts thousands of birds and migratory species. Interestingly, until around the 1960s, Ashuradeh was also the main habitat of the Mazandaran tiger, the most famous extinct animal of the northern region.
