Tabriz Municipality Palace

When traveling to East Azerbaijan, don't miss the Tabriz Municipality Palace. This building is located right in the center of Tabriz next to the Clock Tower and is the place where municipal affairs are conducted. The Tabriz Municipality Palace dates back about 80 years. Its long history has made this building recognized as a kind of urban museum. By visiting the Tabriz Municipality Palace, you can see relics from past decades including the first municipal vehicle, the first fire truck, the camera museum, and the carpet museum. Interestingly, before the construction of Tabriz Municipality Square, this area was an abandoned and silent cemetery.

During the construction period of the municipality building, between 1935 and 1939 (solar calendar years 1314 to 1318), Haj Arfa' al-Molk Jalili was the mayor of Tabriz. Until 1946 (solar year 1325), this square was a crossroads, and during the era of Seyyed Ja'far Pishevari, founder of the Azerbaijan Democratic Party, the crossroads was converted into a square. After the square was built, a statue of Bagher Khan, the most famous fighter of the Iranian Constitutional Movement, was installed in Tabriz Municipality Square.

After the fall of Seyyed Ja'far Pishevari, a statue of Reza Shah was placed there. The statue of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was destroyed after the revolution, and Tabriz Clock Square became a gathering place for the people.
