The Holy Mary Zor Zor Church of Maku is one of the most beautiful churches in West Azerbaijan, located on the Zangi Mar river near the village of Baron. It attracts many tourists with its historical stories and beautiful surrounding views.
One of these places is the Zor Zor Church, also known as the Holy Mary Church. In fact, this church is the only remaining part of a monastery that has been destroyed over the years. Beyond the ancient civilization of Maku and many historical buildings, its natural beauties such as beautiful rivers, springs, caves, waterfalls, and good weather attract every tourist's attention. The name of this church was registered in the list of national monuments of Iran on September 29, 2002, and it has also gained global attention due to its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The construction of Zor Zor Church began in 1298 AD by the Archbishop Saint Thaddeus named Zakaria and it became one of the centers for religious, cultural, and literary education. The construction of this church was completed in 1314 AD.
