Susan Chelcheragh Plain of Damash

Susan Chelcheragh was first identified in 1975 by a French botanist named "Leder Boury" and after introducing this flower to the Iranian government at the same time, it was included in the list of national environmental heritage by the Supreme Environmental Council.

Susan Chelcheragh is one of the rarest flowers in the world, registered as the national flower in our country's national heritage list. The only protected habitat of this beautiful flower in our country is near the village of Damash in the Ammarloo district of Rudbar, covering an area of 4 hectares. This picturesque plain hosts many people from mid-June to early July who have passed the winding Bareh Sar-Jirandeh road to reach this flower plain. It is worth noting that with the start of the Susan Chelcheragh flowering season, around mid-June, a festival called the Susan Chelcheragh Festival is held in Damash. In this ceremony, the blooming of these beautiful flowers is celebrated, and local music, traditional dance, and native customs welcome tourists.

Finally, it should be mentioned that this flower plain, besides Susan Chelcheragh, is also the habitat for other plants such as buckthorn, cornel, violet, various ferns, bellflower, wild clover, and red valerian.

It is worth knowing that it is said this rare flower grows only in two places in the world; Damash in Gilan and Lankaran in the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Susan Chelcheragh is a plant with a height of half to one and a half meters, with white inverted flowers, curled petals, prominent seeds, and long stamens. According to locals, its moonlight color and inverted shape, which resembles a chandelier, have given it this name. They even believe that Susan Chelcheragh emits light at night. However, according to botanists, due to the fluorescent substances in the stamens of Susan Chelcheragh, this flower has the ability to reflect light.
