The Qiz Qalasi Dam Lake is one of the tourist attractions of Khoda Afarin County in East Azerbaijan Province, located at the zero border point between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Qiz Qalasi Dam on the Aras River is the third joint dam between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan and is the newest hydraulic structure in East Azerbaijan, Iran.
On May 20, 2024, before the helicopter carrying the president crashed, it was inaugurated by Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi. After the inauguration ceremony of this dam, Ayatollah Ebrahim Raisi and his companions began their helicopter flight towards Tabriz, which unfortunately ended in a helicopter crash in the Dizmar forest.
The Qiz Qalasi Dam is an earth-fill dam with a clay core and is located downstream of the Khoda Afarin Dam; the construction of this dam took nearly 19 years.
